What’s my leave balance again?

“Boss, can I take leave next Thursday? I promised to take my kids to Wild Wild Wet before the end of their school holidays,” buzzes a WhatsApp from Tim, one of your staff.

As a manager, how do you respond to such requests? Do you (a) trust that Tim is keeping track of his own leave and approve the request without further checks? Or (b) ask your colleagues in Human Resources (HR) what Tim’s leave balance is before approving his request?

Most managers will probably do (a) as long as there is another staff to cover Tim in his absence. However, such “blind” approvals can be problematic. Tim might exceed his leave balance and you may get an earful from HR for letting your staff take time-off “anytime they wish”.
